Jane Austen: Rise of a Genius — A Brilliant BBC Documentary That Changed How I See Her

I finally got around to watching Jane Austen: Rise of a Genius on the BBC, and I’m so glad I did. I expected something nice and educational, but it was so much more than that - smart, moving, beautifully made, and genuinely inspiring. If you're even slightly into Jane Austen (or great storytelling in general), I’d highly recommend it.

Aired in 3 chapters, it struck the perfect balance - properly scholarly without being dry, and dramatised in a way that enhanced her story rather than distracting from it. There was no cringey dialogue or awkward costuming. The scenes were wordless and atmospheric, and gave me a real sense of what Austen’s life might have felt like beyond the facts.

The people interviewed were brilliant too - writers, actors, academics - all clearly passionate about her work. Their enthusiasm was infectious. Scratch that, their love for her was infectious!

I’ve always liked Austen’s writing, but this documentary completely shifted how I think and feel about her. It made me want to go back and re-read everything with fresh eyes. I came away with a much deeper admiration for her - not just as a writer, but as a person. The way she observed the world, the choices she made, her sharpness and wit; her compassion… she really was extraordinary. Also, she was incredibly brave.

Before watching this, I think I underestimated her a bit - saw the romance and the humour and didn’t quite realise the depth. Now I feel like I get it. And I want to read more.

Whether you’re a long-time fan or still figuring out if Austen’s your thing, Rise of a Genius is thoughtful, well-paced, and full of insight. And if you’ve already seen it - tell me what you thought! I’d love to know if it made you see her differently too.

Our Jane Austen Book Subscription is ideal, if like me, you’re in the mood for a reread. It includes beautifully designed editions of her novels, paired with tea or coffee. It’s gentle, lovely, and very Austen-y.
